come here for overseer thots

Wei Wuxian generally saw the contestants as his responsibility — it was his duty to help them, shepherd them, and be their constant as they went through the four weeks of being in the dating game. He thought that especially with Luka. Learning more about his backstory, seeing the way he thought about things, the attachments he made and the awkwardness that he approached things with all made Wei Wuxian feel like Luka was a wayward junior of his that he had to take care of.

There's a part of him that can't help but see Luka's struggle through his own personal lens. The suffering of taking on filial debt and letting that dominate your life. He knows that Luka doesn't see it like that but for him, it seems so obvious that Luka's been brainwashed into thinking he's truly indebted to his father for just being alive. It makes him deeply unhappy because Wei Wuxian lost his first life due to the weight of that specific kind of debt. As a result, he really wanted to Luka to find a way to let go of it over the course of the four weeks.

He's so, so, so happy that Luka found Maya and while he's worried a little about the intensity of his infatuation with Maya, he thinks if it's leading him to a healthier path that has him thinking for himself and choosing his own happiness over his father's, then maybe that's good enough. He still kind of gives him the heebie jeebies though, like, lowkey, but Wei Wuxian doesn't really mind that either. In his head it's kind of like when a predator meets another predator but they have no reason to fight. He's not scared of Luka but he does know things could've gone much differently if he wasn't careful.

Either way, he's happy for Luka's future and kind of relieved he won't have to see him again LMFAO.

Their relationship is so funny because I think Edamura likes Wei Wuxian more than Wei Wuxian likes Edamura. NOT THAT HE DOESN'T LIKE EDAMURA but the anxious overthinker types aren't his usual cup of tea and if they had more time together, there's a chance Wei Wuxian would've gotten sick of Edamura and been like you gotta get your shit together, man. It's funny, Edamura reminds him the most of one of his closest friends — Nie Huaisang — who is another anxious overthinker type. And Wei Wuxian finds him so exasperating but fun to bully.

There are... a LOT of parallels between Nie Huaisang and Edamura that I won't go into because it's too canon specific, but that's part of what Wei Wuxian was navigating in his relationship with Edamura. Especially when he read up on his backstory. Now I, Squee, am not canon familiar so I was just rolling with the app and love survey, but Wei Wuxian had that level of info too. He was just like... this fucking guy...

He was really happy that Edamura was spending most of his time in the game being his sincere self though, he was worried initially that Edamura would be putting on a front and he did for a bit in the freelancer Edamura vs conman Edamura way but their week two convo did a whole lot in helping break down Edamura's walls and help Wei Wuxian feel confident that Edamura was going to actually go through the game looking out for himself instead of trying to be with what other people wanted him to be.

He's genuinely so relieved that Edamura found Rom and that they have something good with each other. He's looking forward to checking in a year from now and seeing if things are still going good. His perspective on their relationship is like: either they're going to be together forever or it's going to fizzle out in like six months. So, you know, prove him wrong!

He hopes Edamura never meets Lan Wangji because Lan Wangji would just take one look at him and then walk away and Wei Wuxian would have to apologize on his behalf 😭 They're basically two popular loner types who would never hang out with a anxious, sarcastic mess like Edamura and Wei Wuxian does not want to have to explain that to Edamura.

OH BOY...........

So, Wei Wuxian likes Rom way more than Rom likes him, for certain. But that's not to say he likes him fully, actually. He can't stand his insincerity and youtuber shtick and finds it annoying to be around and the fact that he was always aware of the cameras to the point he never let his guard down completely in front of Wei Wuxian is a point of annoyance for Wei Wuxian. He is genuinely surprised that Rom found something sincere in the course of the game because he kind of wrote him off as a lost cause after he realized Rom would never drop the act.

Of course this is like, with the caveat that Wei Wuxian doesn't know the modern era enough to be hyperaware of cameras the way Rom is. His understanding of reality TV is based off of what information production fed him and his own personal research but there's a difference between say, reading a book versus living it in person. Still it's funny because Wei Wuxian is also a victim to his reputation in canon and functions as the "boogeyman" in his world with people being scared to say even his name or his title. Little kids play games where the "enemy" is the Yiling Patriarch (his title) and run away from whoever is the Yiling Patriarch because that role is dubbed as "evil". So, that's the level of infamy he has in his canon.

But it's kind of funny in that sense because it's almost a mirror image of what Rom goes through with people thinking he's creepy and weaponizing his creep factor to put distance between himself and others in order to protect people, right? Because Wei Wuxian just lets people believe he's evil and uses it as a means to protect people as well. So, they have that similarity but they'll never come to a common ground just by nature of their perspectives especially on ghosts and the undead.

Wei Wuxian just fundamentally does not see ghosts or resentful energy as a bad thing and this is part of what makes him a pariah in his own canon. There's a lot of "traditional" cultivators who think what he does is heretical, essentially. So, Rom is not strange for thinking Wei Wuxian is bad news at all! But Wei Wuxian will always think that there is more useful ways to navigate ghosts and resentful energy than just getting rid of it. They can be friends, allies, weapons, etc. And Wei Wuxian does not acknowledge the trauma Rom's gone through to get his perspective, which kind of makes him shitty as a result but it just is what it is! It's funny though, because Wei Wuxian's death was actually him being torn apart by ghosts when his spiritual energy backfired on him. So, he should be more wary of ghosts! He's not though.

I think a key shift in their relationship was when Rom got together with Edamura though because it made Wei Wuxian understand and accept that he would never be in Rom's "close circle" or even anyone he would rely on. Because it came as such a surprise to him since he really didn't think Rom would let anyone that close to him during his time in the game. He felt like he should have been able to predict a development like that, but Rom was so closed off in his eyes that he didn't expect him to get close enough to anyone for it to happen, let alone someone like Edamura. It's seeing them get together that made him realize Rom might be closed off in front of the cameras but he's especially closed off to Wei Wuxian. So, he accepts that now.

Though he's genuinely happy for him and Edamura but he's not expecting Rom to ever want to talk to him again after the game has ended. He expects to get updates from Edamura on their relationship progression though! But lmao, like I told Al, he expects it to either last forever or fizzle out in like six months. He's rooting for you guys, though! A little bit. Kind of.

Ironically, he's pretty sure Rom would get along with Lan Wangji because he's much more respectful and less heretical than Wei Wuxian but he doesn't like the idea of that either so he doesn't want them to meet.

Wei Wuxian's thoughts on Ringo is so funny because he truly doesn't really get what an AI or a robot is. He's just like "okay, so she's not human, but she's alive and she's figuring out what being a human is like. So, she's a yao, clearly." And so that's the frame of reference he took when approaching Ringo. Just a yao who is friendly with humans and doesn't want to kill them but not a human at the end of the day. It didn't make him wary of her or anything, it's just how he classified her in his mind.

Especially because Ringo is just so friendly that he didn't feel like he had to worry much about her at all. Part of his role as overseer, he felt obligated to take care of the contestants and help them achieve what they needed and wanted over the course of the four weeks together. He never felt like he had to guide Ringo though or make sure she was okay with what was going on because she was so vocal and clear about her needs.

So in his mind he was like "okay, she's great and totally fine and also I'll put her down if she goes crazy" LMFAO. IT NEVER CAME UP ICLY BECAUSE HE DIDN'T NEED TO THINK ABOUT IT but that was genuinely his approach to Ringo. And then she was so earnest about taking care of him that he didn't feel like he needed to change his approach with her at all.

In his mind, he also kind of envisioned her as someone who had a good pulse check on how the cast was feeling. So, if she was worried about the cast and said something to him, he would've taken it more seriously than anyone else. She was very much a protagonist in his eyes. So, there's that! But yeah, tl;dr he likes her, would kill her if he had to, but genuinely glad he didn't have to.

He's also so thrilled about her relationship with Furina and Serpilia because they're both girls he liked a lot as well and it just feels good to see three people he likes be so happy with each other.

SHOKO... HIS BELOVED.

Shoko was someone Wei Wuxian was both so supremely impressed with and was a lowkey favorite. He thought she had such a good approach to things, being open to everything that happened here but not the point of losing herself as a result. Her "what the hell, sure" attitude was something he thought a lot of the other contestants could use and thought she brought a really good sense of grounding to the cast as a whole, which made him very happy.

He was genuinely surprised by her opening up to him though because he kind of thought he'd have to work harder on it? Everything he knew about Shoko was that she didn't really have room for the kind of emotions shown in AYTO in her own personal life so he was expecting to have to encourage her to open up to people along the way. But she surprised him by letting the relationships come to her and making deep connections with everyone in the house.

He really admired her ability to connect with the other contestants and the level of respect she earned from them. No one seemed to have a bad thing to say about Shoko at all and he really thought that was well deserved. He liked their conversations a lot, thought she really brought some consideration to their talks and was earnestly working on these relationships she was building even if she comes off so laid back.

He was touched when she asked him to summon the ghosts for her again, so she could say her goodbyes. He never has a chance to use his abilities for people like that so being able to offer her something only he could offer was something that made him proud. He really hopes it gives her closure and helps her move onto the next thing in her life in a healthy way.

He also thought she was cooler than him, btw. And she reminded him the most of Lan Wangji of everyone in the cast. He did have the thought that Shoko was the type of woman he would've had a crush on as a teenager and would've done stupid shit to get her attention because of it.

Serpilia!! Hilariously enough, Serpilia is another contestant that Wei Wuxian didn't think was human but a yao. Which he was fine with!! But it contributed to his assumption that she was just so laid back and chill with everything because she has had a peculiar life in general. He thought she was chill to, possibly, her detriment honestly and was really worried for her for a split second there.

He likes Serpilia. Thinks she's a good person and someone to have a good time with. He kind of wondered if she really needed him though, because she seemed like she was going the navigate the game how she wanted to with or without his advice. So, he felt a bit useless in their conversations sometimes because he didn't know if she expected anything or wanted anything from him at all.

He was crushed when she said she had feelings for Ringo and Furina though and genuinely wasn't sure what advice he could give her then, which just increased his feeling of being useless for Serpilia. So, imagine his relief when they figured it out and decided to go the OT3 route. Just like, damn, I didn't help at all but hell yeah, she got what she wanted.

He's a little worried for her though with what he read about her (which is essentially just the app/love survey) but he kind of expects again that she's going to approach it the way she wants and will figure it out in her own way. He doesn't think he'd have any good advice to give her that she hasn't already figured out herself.

In the end, while he thinks they'd have a good time together and can hang out and have fun, he's not expecting her to seek him out for anything specifically after this. Just knowing that she will find what she needs the way she needs it and he will be rooting for her on the sidelines as a result.

Poppy is officially junior-zoned for Wei Wuxian. He sees her as his junior and as one, it's his responsibility to take care of her and be supportive to her. She came in and he kind of read her as a mess which he didn't really know what to do with because all the women in his life aren't like that — which is really just a reflection of his time. Women in his time weren't allowed to be girlfailures LMFAO. So he was like damn, who lets you live like this, Poppy?

But once he started to see her more as his junior, he was just like "I need to make sure she's okay and doing her best here". It's why he always had candy at the ready for her whenever she came to visit him in the Talking Heads. Their first conversation delighted him because he learned about the modern world and he expected to learn a lot more from her but instead it turned into him hearing out where she was and what she needed. Which made him very happy.

She's also the person he understands the least of the contestants because she's such a normie. What the hell is a video game. What the hell is a programmer. He does not understand these concepts but it's cool, it's fine, whatever! Once he stopped trying to figure out equivalents for him, he just let their relationship ride and enjoy it for what it is. And he enjoyed it a lot.

He was really, really happy when she found a love interest in Shoko. He wasn't sure what to predict for Poppy and what she'd come out of this game with but Shoko was definitely not on his radar. If he thought about it a bit, Shoko and Poppy kind of remind him of him and Lan Wangji and their dynamic. The excitable nerd with the quiet and indifferent person-standing-emoji. It's not an exact 1:1 comparison but it's close so it amused him.

He definitely wants to check in on them down the line and see if they're still together. And if they get married, he wants an invite to that wedding. He'll even bring Lan Wangji. Even though he's pretty sure Poppy would give Lan Wangji a migraine.

Aventurine, his little meow meow. Wei Wuxian definitely held such high affection for Aventurine over the course of their time together. He kind of expected, from reading up on him and their first conversation, to have to negotiate more with Aventurine for how he felt, what he was doing, what he wanted out of the game and he was fully prepared for it! It's why he struck that deal with him in their first conversation, wanting to give Aventurine some sort of leverage to play the game well and to use Wei Wuxian as his resource.

Of course, then Aventurine didn't need any of that. Their conversations were so funny because Wei Wuxian was always expecting charming, scheming gambler side of Aventurine to come out but it never did. Instead he was sincere and thoughtful and trying his best to play through the game the way he knew how. Which Wei Wuxian admired a lot. He felt sympathy for him in regards to him being aware the IPC was watching and wondered if he'd get out from under their thumb through playing this game — which he did! Which was fantastic.

Aventurine and Nico were so sweet to him. Nico was one of the contestants he thought of as having his shit together and knowing what Aventurine needed, it seemed like a perfect fit for them both. Aventurine kind of reminds him of himself, if he's honest, just that sort of... secretly lost and yearning for someone or something to ground you part. He was like that before he found Lan Wangji and he kind of sees that from Aventurine and Nico.

He really is looking forward to checking in on Aventurine a while from now and to see what he's doing and how he's faring. He thinks he'll have a happier life in Nico's world but no less adventurous either. He fully expects Aventurine and Nico to get involved in the politics of Nico's world and to cause chaos. Which he fully supports as well because fuck yeah, that's what you SHOULD be doing with your life and your freedom!

Aventurine was also one of the ones he wanted to "help" the most with his ghost spell on Week Two. He wasn't sure if it would be received well but he had the thought that Aventurine might like to see his sister again if only in the form he knew how to see her. Of course, he wasn't sure if it would be his sister that came but he wanted to try anyway. (I set the rules of the spell as being that he was summoning the ghost/memories of their most important person, so Wei Wuxian had no control over who showed up.) They never talked about it but he hoped that night gave something good for Aventurine, even if it was something painful as well.

Anyway, you better invite him to the wedding, Aventurine.

Bro, Yi Sang is so confusing and Wei Wuxian has no idea what to do with it. He feels like he was on the outside looking in on the journey Yi Sang went on through the course of the game. Yi Sang showed up with muddy feet and soaking wet and he was just like, this guy is going to be a handful, isn't he? And he was right! Yi Sang was the most out there of the contestants. He tried so hard to follow his thought process but failed spectacularly and just accepts that.

He was definitely the contestant he was worried the most about because sometimes, Wei Wuxian wasn't even sure Yi Sang knew this was a dating game at all. Like, he showed up but was he even all there? Who knows! Wei Wuxian sure didn't. Wei Wuxian didn't talk about his personal life with most contestants but with Yi Sang, he didn't even know if talking about his own life would help him either. Or if he'd even process it?

He had hope for him when he realized that Yingying liked him and that they were going somewhere together but then their week two conversation killed him dead. He was once again like does this guy even know what's going ON. Like truly, what is happening here. He kind of figured the rest of the contestants would figure out how to handle him because they seemed to like him a lot! And they had more time with Yi Sang than he did, so he accepted he wouldn't be able to force much change with him.

And then week three happened and Wei Wuxian truly was at a loss for words. Yi Sang changed so much?! And was so happy and engaged suddenly. It was baffling to him and he knew part of it was because of Yingying and another part was his own journey over the course of the weeks they were together so he was happy for him, but truly did not know what to do with him. Being the overseer for Yi Sang was truly just spectating the most wild character journey in the show.

Either way, he's happy for him and fully expecting to get updates on his life or he'll be sad.

Furina de Fontaine! One of his favorite of the contestants. Furina had the most of Wei Wuxian's sympathy when she came into the game, after reading up on her and learning her story. So, she was already poised to be someone he was even more worried and hopeful about their journey over. But then she came and was very much playing it up for the cameras and trying to put on a good show, which he expected and hoped she'd let her guard down a bit over the next few weeks.

Honestly, I'd be remiss not to compare her to Rom in this case because to Wei Wuxian, they were both the two performers of the cast. For Rom, it irritated Wei Wuxian that he wouldn't let go of the bit but for Furina, Wei Wuxian was much more sympathetic because of her history and because, honestly, he just liked her more. And Furina did come into it a bit more authentically which is what Wei Wuxian wanted of the contestants. He wanted them to truly engage with each other and find real connections.

Which is what Furina did! She found it through Ringo and later, Serpilia! He really thought that it was wonderful that Furina gained such good friends and girlfriends over the course of her time there. He counted on her to be someone that would help soothe the cast too whenever there was troubles — which she did, with the ragers and the like. So, when he said he was proud of her, he truly meant it because she didn't let the presence of the cameras keep her from finding true connection and making real friends.

He doesn't see her as a junior or younger than him (especially since she's not) but he does see her as someone who needs encouragement and he hoped that's what he could provide her. He thinks he did a good job at that, he's not too worried about where she'll go after this and what she'll do but he thinks no matter what it is, it'll be exciting and less lonely than what she had before.

Either way, he's looking for that wedding invite and she's also one of the few people that he would happily invite to his world for a visit.

Laopopo! Ahhh... Odile... she is both someone he likes and an irritant, which is expected of someone being very auntie at you. He generally doesn't like it when older figures try to be parental to him in some way, because of his own issues with authority figures and parental figures. He has a lot of hang ups over that and feels much more comfortable in the role of senior to junior or advisor and not the other way around. He has no mentors or parents in his life so Odile was definitely a weird figure for him and not one he was entirely comfortable with.

So, their first conversation, he kind of figured after that he'd just be nagged at the rest of the time together. That Odile would keep her guard up and just see him as someone she had the authority to boss around. Which, he didn't like but he wasn't going to make waves by trying to correct her or anything. If she wanted tea or whatever, he'd just do it. It's no big deal. Which means he wasn't expecting much going forward, even in his self-appointed role as caretaker and advisor of the contestants.

What he didn't expect was her to actually value his opinion and observations and come to him with her sincere thoughts as the game progressed. That made him very happy and made him come around on her. So, as she opened up, he wanted to make sure he was there for her and that her opportunity for expression wasn't met with scorn but with sincerity. Which means that's the mantle he took up when interacting with her. He was touched when she shared her real reason for being here with him and was glad that it seemed like she was finding that in her own way, even if it wasn't romantic or anything like that.

He wondered a lot about her relationship with the other contestants because he knew being treated like they were younger/kids the whole time wouldn't do on a dating show like this. It even rankled him, after all. But he's glad they still gave her the opportunity to be their friend and accepted her into the group. That was his biggest worry when it came to Odile.

So, now that things are over and she's acknowledged the group as her friends, including him, he's glad she had the opportunity to make them. He hopes she got what she was looking for and is looking forward to knowing where she goes from here. She might even be invited for tea with him and Lan Wangji, but first he has to complain about her to Lan Wangji for a bit to get it out of his system.
