Messmer!! His favorite contestant!! So, here is where I admit that part of that was cope. Wei Wuxian was truly baffled by Messmer's presence from day one because he wasn't sure what he was looking for or if it was possible for him to get it. He was so tall and otherworldly that he wasn't sure if Messmer would "click" with the other contestants as a result. He defined him in his mind as a half-human, half-yao because of the snakes and so he was curious what exactly it meant for someone like him to go from the horrors of his life to something so normal as a dating game.

But he decided to make an active choice and believe in Messmer instead. He could have treated him like he was a foreign, surreal thing or he could treat him as a genuine contestant who is going through the game looking for what everyone else is seeking at the same time. And so, he decided to do the latter. Reading up on him made him know that he had skeletons in his closet but so does Wei Wuxian, a lot of which he kept to himself over the course of the game because he didn't want to derail people in their journeys by talking about his murder or torture. He's done bad things and he knew Messmer did as well and so, he felt a kinship with him there.

He knew that Messmer didn't believe in the romance part. He knew that Messmer only wanted the wish. But it was his strong belief that Messmer would be happier with a true companion if he could find one in the show. Which is why he was so happy that he found Verso, who he didn't even predict as someone Messmer would end up drawn to but made so much sense retroactively to him.

In the end, there was a fair amount of projection from Wei Wuxian onto Messmer because he could see himself becoming like Messmer so easily if he didn't have Lan Wangji. He's done his stint as a depressed, isolated war criminal and he died because of it. He's lucky that he had a second chance and was brought back to life but he doesn't wish that fate on anyone. So, seeing Messmer try and make an active choice to live and regain his life back under his own control was something Wei Wuxian was very happy about.

They also didn't really get into it but Wei Wuxian deeply understands the weight of filial piety that Messmer carries and it's part of his own reason for dying the first time around. So, he wanted Messmer to move past what he saw as his debt to his mother and reclaim his life as his own. He wasn't sure he'd be able to help with that because he knew Messmer saw him as a jester of sorts but he was rooting for him regardless.

Really, it just comes down to the fact that Wei Wuxian saw Messmer as deeply sympathetic and was hoping he'd find his life again through the game. Which it seemed he did, so he's very happy about that. He's not expecting Messmer to want to talk to him again after the game though, which he accepts, but he will check in with Verso to see if they're still together.
