Verso and Ringo are taken to an arcade bar. There are drinks. There are games. There are tickets to be won!

bc jen forgorStill, it looks like fun. The smell of cheap pizza (but not bad!) wafts through the air. Old school games on one end, huge fancy arcade cabinets on the other.]

I think that depends on what we pick. Some of those “games” looked positively alien.
[The prize counter awaits! The lower ticket prizes are about what’s expected: the usual little toys, plastic tops, rubber bouncy balls, erasers. The higher ticket ones, too: plushies on a shelf along the wall, off brand iPads, maybe a dinky little handheld gaming system.
Maybe something recognizable from their worlds, too…]

Think they'd take the knock-off iPad away from us if we won it? It'd kind of circumvent the whole "no writing" thing in the rules if we had one of those.

[But, that said, he nearly shakes his head, about to defer to her the pick of the prizes, when his gaze drifts upwards to the row of plushies.
And he spots a strange-looking, yet very familiar, one.
Surprised, at a loss for words, he finds himself forgetting to reply.]

She was expecting more to follow that, so when he falls silent and doesn't speak, she pauses, and then glances over to follow his gaze.

She can't tell what he's looking at amongst all of the other prizes.]

[The reply is immediate, torn from a surreal reverie. He looks at her, then looks at the plushie, then points at it.]

[Why is he here in plushie form? Like the plushie he had as a child— wait, is that right? The memories get twisted and fuzzy in his mind.]

[She plants her hands on her hips, grinning at him.]

[Ringo's so thoughtful. So straightforward and assured; he wishes he could be like that, too.]

Looks like we've got skill-based games [Gesturing to skee ball and the like] luck-based games [obvious] and timing-based games [like those little light flashy ones where the light goes in a circle and you have to stop it just right fuck those games btw].

All right, all right. Time to impress.
[Maybe.
Anyhow, there are two stations, one on each side, so they can both play at the same time. Verso inserts enough coins to get them both started, and the game lights up, flashing and playing tinny music. A clown's laughter echoes somewhere from its hidden speakers.]

[She just shakes her head a bit with a sigh, and then reaches for one of the balls.]
So the name of the game's just to knock them all down, yeah? We've totally got this.

I think so, too. I'm just going to pretend they're Nevrons.
[Anyway, the timer starts, and they're free to start lobbing balls.
It turns out that Verso wasn't lying when he said he had good hand-eye coordination. He manages to throw with strength and accuracy both, knocking over several of the clowns in succession, racking up points. But there is always That One; the clown that for some reason, he just can't quite seem to knock down. The ball always goes whiffing past its "hair", which only exists in the first place to make it seem like a larger target than it is.]

He's doing better than Ringo, who is throwing the balls with more and more aggravation as she fails to hit more than a couple of targets.]

Okay, despite that one clown that is now his mortal enemy, he has to take a moment to tease.]
