[ he's a breath away from dismissing her judgement (or lack thereof) as meaningless, but halts the words before they leave. She's an exception. Not for any personal stake he may have in her, but because he considers it highly likely she's his intended match. Messmer deadened himself to the hatred of others long ago; her rejection wouldn't have touched him. The idea that she might consider it a reflection of herself in some way would. ]
