[and yes, that's exactly what he's doing! he takes Messmer's hand in his own, holding it by the back as he tucks the two wooden sticks between his fingers, adjusting them appropriately so they're gripping the chopsticks in proper, albeit slightly awkward, form]

There. It might feel weird, but if you hold this finger still and use this one to move the top chopstick up and down, you can grab anything!
