Nico and Aventurine are taken Go-Kart Racing. Two elegant guys like them, of course the production wanted to see them fumble. But they can make it work, right?
Highlights
There is a snack bar with pizza and burgers.
You will be yelled at if you don't drive properly.
[ Joke’s on you, production team. Nico is a science fiction vampire, he knows how to drive. He’s also casting Aventurine a sidelong glance with a smirk. ]
[ My cursory attempts to find fanart of Aventurine in one of those A1 driver suits have ended in vain, but just know he's extra so he's probably wearing one. Also because it's tight and looks good. He knows what he's doing! ]
Not if you're eating my dust, first. I'm ready to put my all on the line to win this one!
[ ...As a helpful attendant hands him a helmet. Safety first! ]
Oh? Bold words...you haven't had a secret drag-racing era that I don't know about in your storied life, have you?
[ Still, the stakes being what they are, this is a wager he can't pass up. Eyes bright even beneath his helmet, he hums playfully, considering. ]
Let's see...as wealth has no real meaning here, a wager of information may fit the bill. If you win, I'll tell you one of my little secrets. And if I win, you tell me one of yours.
[ It's his very roundabout way of...trying...to open up a little bit more. Even then, it doesn't seem like much of a risk, given his tendency to win at everything (except life). He'll be hearing some spicy secret from Nico soon enough...
Aventurine takes the vampire's hand, and gives it a hearty shake. ]
A deal, then. May the best racer win.
[ Time to pile into his lil' kart and get racing!! ]
[ The most important rule of battle is to never engage in a land war in Asia. The second most important rule is to never challenge a vampire to a go-kart race, which is definitely a thing people say.
They pile into their karts, get to the starting line and... 3... 2... 1... go! Nico is off like a shot, taking that first turn perhaps a little too fast, but he adjusts quickly. ]
[ Squirrelly little things...Nico has such a way with words. Aventurine laughs - maybe a little maniacally - as he gains on Nico, taking the turn a little smoother, cutting close to another cart to keep up.
One of the attendants is definitely yelling at him to be careful, it's fine. ]
Anyway, he sees a chance to dart between another pair of carts to get a little distance and leave Aventurine stuck in proverbial traffic, so he takes it. NYOOM. ]
Aventurine is effectively cut off from his pursuit, no matter how he tries to edge around the crowd. Who let these Sunday (no relation to the Oak Family) drivers out onto the track?!
Around the next turn, he sees an opening to get by, definitely nudging one of the other karts as he goes by. He is once again reprimanded by the attendant. Nico has a good lead on him now, though, so he can't relent! All or nothing, and such. ]
[ Nico might just win by default if Aventurine gets kicked out.
But no, they've both broken away from the pack by now, but it's going to be awfully hard to beat Nico's lead and the edge his preternatural senses and reflexes give him on the race track.
Unless Aventurine has a blue shell in his pocket, it seems like this race is already won. ]
[ He might have a banana peel, but he just can't throw it that far...😔
No matter how he accelerates and pushes his kart to its fastest, Nico just has too much of a lead. He could try something incredibly risky and jump the track, but he could severely injure himself, or worse, get kicked out, so he behaves...even if it means that Nico clears the finish line a good few seconds before him.
Wait...he...actually lost? As his kart comes to a stop, he actually looks a little...stunned. ]
So you really were a pro driver in the past! What a race!
I do have a few centuries of experience on you, mon ami.
[ Okay, but for the reckless driving, they're both getting told to get out anyway. There are kids here guys! Thankfully, it's late enough that they can go elsewhere if they like. ]
Hm. Shall we go for a walk? I believe someone owes me a secret.
[ Well, it was fun and diverting while it lasted, but Aventurine would never let a debt go unpaid, so after they're unceremoniously asked to leave, he takes Nico's hand with a nod. ]
I'm far too riled up after that to think of going back anytime soon. [ And...he wouldn't want to, even if he didn't promise to share a secret. ] That's right...I did say that, didn't I?
[ A brief pause, as they start down the sidewalk. Maybe he should have thought about what to say, but he'd been so sure he would win...it hadn't even entered his mind. ]
I'm...terrified of losing, you know.
[ That's not the secret he's sharing, just a freebie. ]
[ Oh. Very suddenly some puzzle pieces snap into place. That unfathomable loneliness and grief, that feeling of hating himself. It comes on the backs of so many dead, and Nico knows all too well the feeling of wondering why — why did it have to be them, and not me? ]
...Yes. [ It's been...years, years and years since his sister told him to run, since that bloody day that should have been one of providence. ] We weren't a prolific people to begin with. Famine and poverty and an age-old blood feud took care of the rest.
[ He stops walking then, uses their joined hands to tug Aventurine close, and pull him into a hug. As ever, Nico is mindful of his strength, but he’s long learned what’s needed for a good hug, how much pressure and warmth. ]
Maybe eventually, he'll stop finding himself utterly astonished at Nico's tender kindness, but in the moment, all he can do is lean into it, his free hand curling against the vampire's chest.
He's heard it before, now and again. When they realize who he is, recall the headlines that had made the rounds after. The IPC had called it an "extinction event", but he never liked that wording. It was genocide. Sigonia became a household name only because of that tragedy, and as its only survivor, others regarded him with fear or pity. I'm so sorry, but they wouldn't meet his eyes, wouldn't ask anything else. And why would they? To them, it was nothing more than a tragic story.
But Nico gives him something that he's never been given before: comfort, a warm reassurance that his words are meant, that he grasps the weight of the tragedy that spurred Aventurine down such a tumultuous, lonely path.
He doesn't say anything. He just curls his fingers in the fabric of Nico's shirt, leans his head against his chest, and lets his tired eyes fall shut, listening to the other man's heart beat. ]
[ Call it a highly educated guess, but he can’t imagine the Aventurine has ever received genuine comfort for his aching heart, someone who cared enough to make him feel not alone in the vast dark in which he shines. That breaks Nico’s heart just as much as knowing why he feels so alone in the first place.
Everyone deserves kindness, he thinks.
Aventurine simply sinks into him, and Nico’s embrace tightens just slightly, one hand coming up to slip into Aventurine’s hair in soothing little motions. ]
I have you.
[ For as long as he needs, be it a moment, an hour, or even forever. ]
[ I have you. He says it so easily, so effortlessly - doesn't he realize how such simple reassurances upend everything Aventurine has come to understand about himself? About his place in the world? They sound like words that should be meant for someone else, anyone else, but they're his.
He's in some kind of danger he's never known before, but it's...warm, here. He doesn't want to throw up his defenses, doesn't want to shore up his walls. (Nico would just fly over them, anyway.) ]
...I miss them everyday, still. [ His family, his people, all of them. For as harsh as the sands of Sigonia-IV were, it was last and only place he knew what love felt like. ] But I...realized something recently. When I see them again...I want to be ready for that day. I want to make them proud.
[ He had to accept the inevitability of his own death before he could come find meaning in his life. Hah, figures. ]
[ Nico is nothing if not that, a bastion of safety and warmth. A lighthouse in even the harshest storm. His life was changed for the better because someone loved him, someone showed him warmth and kindness. It took losing that light to realize what it meant to him.
If he can be even a fraction of that for someone else, it will have all been worth it.
He pulls away a little. Not enough to let go, but enough to look at Aventurine, curled in his arms. ]
[ Living the best he can is a goal he isn't sure he's met yet, but it's part of what brought him here in the first place. A change of pace, a different perspective...something that he wanted to do that had nothing to do with his work for the IPC. It's a work in progress, one that started with the acknowledgement that he wanted to live at all.
He meets Nico's gaze, smile soft, a little color in his cheeks before he leans in to press a quick kiss to his cheek. Kyaa... ]
...Thank you. [ He doesn't quite feel qualified to bear the legacy of living for all of them, but he's. Trying. ] Haha, I haven't put too much of a damper on our date, have I? My apologies.
[ But whether or not the vibes are off, he's still glad he shared it. Which...is an unusual and novel feeling in itself. ]
