[ He says, motioning with his fingers to his own neck, tracing the place where Aventurine’s tattoo sits. It’s been a point of curiosity for him for a bit. ]
Nico swiftly scoops Verso into his arms like he weighs nothing at all and leaps, weaving through the branches of a tree hanging over the path to fly them over to practically the other side of the gardens.
They touch down on a small, isolated path lined with twinkling, soft white lights. ]
[ Once they get their treats, they can walk for a bit. Nico keeps the box tucked under his arm while they look for someplace to sit. ]
Ah, I admit I love sharing things like this as well. It is one of the ways I like to keep those I care about close to my heart.
[ They’re of the same mind in that regard, at least.
Their wanderings take them to a little pavilion area, covered in string lights, where they can pretty easily find a place to sit. He’ll even pull her chair out for her. ]
I have collected quite a few in my time, it is true. I do not travel terribly far any more these days.
[ It does sound serious, and though Edamura might reach for his chopsticks casually while he's speaking, Shoko puts both chopsticks and beer glass down.
And, truth to tell, part of her... isn't all that surprised. Even from the start, she'd offered "freelancer" as a purposely vague title. And with the way he so effortlessly put on his little acts at the brewery...
...Remembering that his mother had been sick and confined to the hospital since he was young...
...She closes her eyes, giving an almost... amused sort of smile. He could almost be a sorcerer, she thinks. And with that thought comes the reminder that even amongst her colleagues, there are many of them that don't exactly abide by society's laws and expectations. Herself, included.
Still, to hear him actually reveal himself as a con man... ]
Hah... You had us fooled, didn't you, Mame-chan?
[ Oddly, she doesn't sound mad, surprised, or disappointed at all. ]
[ this thread is making me really want mozz sticks ]
Commonalities? Do you really think they're worth factoring in here?
[ Another sip of his coffee, fingers lingering against the handle and tapping against the ceramic in thought. ]
... in truth, I was quite shocked that Mr. Yi Sang wasn't a match with Miss Yingying. They were the sort of contrast that a television production would love -- opposites attract, a heartwarming story of a beautiful young woman bringing out the best in an otherwise rather morose young man. But seeing as that's fallen through, it just feels like the most obvious conclusion in order to create a well-rounded package in the end. Don't you think so?
[god same. Ringo stop stuffing your face and share some with the class.
She is finishing off said mozzarella stick before she responds, humming a little.]
Here's what I think.
You're not on the wrong track with that. I thought Yi Sang and Yingying had a pretty good chance for all of those reasons. But they're not it, so we're missing something there.
I don't think every match is gonna be the same, but for Furina and me, we have a lot in common. Not just superficial things, either. Like... both of us want to experience human life to the fullest. Both of us have reasons why we haven't been able to yet.
... Might make you uncomfortable, but I don't think the matches are gonna be based off of something too superficial. We have to start digging.
[ he doesn't have to ask what she means, even if he thinks she has no reason to apologize for it. His gaze remains on the task at hand, voice as flat as ever. ]
[. . . it's the lack of anger and disappointment in her voice that prevents him from taking those words to their worst logical conclusion. from guessing that she is making the same assumptions Odile almost had: that everything he has done since arriving has been nothing more than an elaborate act. a con. a swindler trying to achieve another score]
[a deep inhale. a slow exhale]
Haha. . . well. [he keeps his voice light, but he isn't looking at her, staring absentmindedly at the bowl of edamame that sits between them] If I had told people the truth, would anyone have believed anything I've said or done over the past two weeks. . .?
[they wouldn't have. they shouldn't have. no one should ever trust a con man]
[ cartoons...?? He doesn't know what that is, either, but he can at least understand the "game" part, sort of. These are part of some children's game. Messmer hums. ]
[ Candidly. But even now, she just can't picture Edamura lying about everything. Especially not after the moment they shared that one haunted night, and the cigarette that went with it. ]
Did you become one to pay for your mother's hospital bills?
[ He sets Verso back down, letting his feet find solid ground again. Then Nico just sort of... tucks his legs up under himself, sitting cross-legged and floating in the air. ]
